Notes from the Eye of the Transformational Tornado

In the past two months I’ve undergone a radical transformation of my belief system.

I have immersed myself deep into personal development. My schedule includes a weekly Master Mind meeting, weekly meetings at Agape Toastmasters, bi-weekly women’s support group at church, Healing School on Wednesday nights with Rev. Ahman and a weekly appearance on The Sheri and Erin Show.

I am the instructor of three college classes: Introduction to Addictive Behaviors, Stress Management for the Helping Professional and Helping and Listening Skills. On a personal level I follow the daily A Course in Miracles lessons and often read from The Bible, the Science of Mind textbook, Catherine Ponder books and Think and Grow Rich.

I am constantly surrounded by teachings about the mind.

This immersion has been beneficial in many ways. I have overcome many hardships and I’ve accomplished goals that I never dreamed possible. But there was one area I was not willing to touch. I tried desperately for most of my life to avoid the deepest emotional issues. I told myself it “didn’t matter” and it was “in the past.”

About 2 years ago, when I had my own personal business and financial crisis, it was obvious that I had no choice but to go deep if I wanted to reclaim my life.

Today I was sitting at a coffee shop and this is what I wrote. Perhaps you can relate:

“Somehow this feels like a big day even though technically “nothing” is happening. It’s 12:17 and the lunch crowd is gathering. I notice I’m afraid of dying rather than exhilarated to be alive. I begin to switch my course gracefully because it seems too drastic to do it suddenly. It seems I truly will die if I try – if only from the shock. My system is slowly adjusting to 2010, to being 44, to being responsible for my life. To growing up. I’m not sure where I was before. Sometimes 1967, other times 1986 or 1992. In the Hell of the past. Very rarely right here, right now.

I’m beginning to see the possibilities. This 2010 world has some pretty cool advantages.

An adventurer could truly seize these opportunities.

I could be an adventurer.

It is entirely up to me.

The Law of Attraction is about more than just “thinking positive” or “focusing on what you want”. In order to get the full impact of the Law of Attraction, your emotional state or “vibrational tone” must be one of Joy, Appreciation, Love or Peace.

When Affirmations Aren’t Working

This week I taught a class titled “What You Say is What You Get” which is step two of the Six Steps From Sabotage to Success.

In my book From Sabotage to Success, I warn against using affirmations as a “fix” or “cover up” for what IS (see page 89 – Keeping Things Realistic and page 90 – Affirmations and Avoidance). Since publishing the book, I’ve spent more and more time doing personal and professional research and I can’t emphasize strongly enough that affirmations alone will not work if there is emotional blockage or if there are subconscious beliefs that negate the affirmation.

It is important in the process of using affirmations to be honest about what IS and not to use affirmations as a way to “will” or “force” things to change. In fact, sometimes using affirmations will bring up subconscious material that needs to be dealt with before you can move forward (see page 94 – Using Affirmations as a Learning Tool). If you insist on “only thinking positive” or if you use affirmations to deny what IS you actually delay your results.

It takes a tremendous amount of mental and physical activity to keep the uncomfortable, subconscious matter below the conscious level. However, when you are able to acknowledge that it exists and take the steps necessary to clear it, you can be freer as a result. In some cases, you can free yourself from negative patterns permanently simply by being willing to face them. Running away keeps the “boogey man” alive, turning around and facing him puts the power back in your hands, where it belongs.

What’s been your experience with affirmations? Have you used them but came to the conclusion that they “don’t work”? Were you mindful of your emotional response to the affirmations? Were you doing the affirmations with a sense of stress or urgency or did you feel good about it and go with the flow? All of these factors and more will determine the success you have when using affirmations.

Making Prosperity Thinking a Habit

I’ll admit. My lifelong habit has been to worry about money. I grew up on the dole. My mom was mostly a single parent and even when she was married, we didn’t have much money. I was the oldest and had many responsibilities. One day, I was given a twenty dollar bill to go to the store and I lost it before I was able to make the necessary purchases. Twenty dollars was a lot of money in the 70’s and going home to face the music on this one was not fun at all.

Some how I took all this to mean that worry was necessary and that there is never enough. I also remember getting the distinct message that money is evil and having it made you evil (maybe that’s why I decided to lose it. I mean seriously, who wants to be evil? Not me!)

We all have our money stories and in this economy, I imagine some of us are facing money demons we never even knew we had. I for one am face to face with it more than ever before. Since my past ways of dealing with money (ignoring it, avoiding it, losing it, etc.) clearly haven’t worked for me, I decided to join with thousands of other people to play the Prosperity Game.

It’s actually a lot of fun to spend money and to have extra money every day. The game is free to play. You can play daily or as often as you want. Basically, once you log in you are presented with a check from the Universe. Everyday the check gets bigger and you get to spend it on anything you want. Stress: A Habit You Can Break

Many of us feel powerless over the stressors in our lives. We think we have no control over whether or not we are stressed. In fact, some of us will indignantly defend our stress by saying things like “How dare you tell me this stress is MY fault, you have no idea how terrible my (job, boss, husband, dog, son, daughter, etc.) is.”

I’m here to say that you always have a choice on whether or not to allow stress in your life. At the very least, you can monitor the intensity of it. If you don’t believe me, read the blog I wrote recently about two people who used their mind to control stress even though one was in a Nazi death camp and the other was beaten and tourtured by his mother for 12 years.

I believe that we all have an inner emotional thermostat that we can control. We can increase and decrease the intensity of our emotional reactions by choosing “Cool thoughts” for example. After repetition, the “cool thoughts” become the new habit and suddenly the person who’s life was anxiety-ridden and chaotic is now calm and peaceful, enjoying the journey. Even the friends and relatives notice a difference but in reality (according to the eyes that see) nothing is different.

These ideas are not new. Nor are they based entirely upon my opinion. These concepts are supported by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, A Course in Miracles, A New Earth, The Success Principles, Think and Grow Rich, and The Secret. When you change your thoughts, and especially when you choose higher vibrations like Joy and avoid lower vibrations like Fear, you will change your life. Period.

You Create Your Habits and Your Reality

I originally saw this video a couple of years ago. It was one of the first things I saw in relation to Christopher Westra and the concept of using holographic creation to create my reality. If you watch this video and think of concepts like this regularly, you can create mental habits that will lead to feelings of joy and happiness.

When you are joyful, you attract great things into your life. In the book, Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks, there is an emotional scale. The higher you are on the scale, the more likely you are to attract good things into your life. The highest emotion on the scale is Joy. The lowest is fear.
